If you go to the customer, the rules are different

Los Angeles County covers an enormous area, and the city itself has around 3.8 million residents as of 2023 spread across neighbourhoods that behave as separate markets. A great many businesses here go to their customers rather than the reverse — trades, mobile services, consultants, contractors, anyone whose work happens at the client’s address rather than at their own.

Local search treats those two situations very differently, and the distinction is the single most consequential thing in this field that nobody explains. A storefront ranks primarily by proximity to the person searching, and its address is the anchor. A service-area business has no such anchor, is generally not shown with a street address, and competes across a declared area on entirely different signals.

Getting this wrong is the most common expensive mistake in local SEO, and it usually happens in the same way: someone advises a mobile business to list a home address or rent a mailbox to "get an address in the area." That is a violation, it risks the profile that generates your work, and it does not do what people think it does.

What service-area businesses should actually do

Set the profile up as what you are. Declare your service areas and hide the address if you do not receive customers at your premises. Hiding it feels like a downgrade and is not — a correctly configured service-area profile competes normally, whereas a profile with a fake or ineligible address is at risk of suspension, which takes your listing out entirely.

Declare an honest area. The instinct is to claim the whole county. In practice a smaller, genuine service area with strong signals performs better than an enormous one you cannot support, and it produces enquiries you actually want rather than jobs ninety minutes away in traffic.

Reviews do more work here than for a storefront. Without an address anchoring you, review volume, recency, and the language customers use in them carry proportionally more weight. Asking every satisfied customer, by name, close to the job, is free and it is the largest lever available to you.

Pages for areas you genuinely work, with real content. Not a page per neighbourhood with the name swapped — that is thin, competes with itself, and is treated accordingly. A page earns its place if it says something true and specific: the kind of buildings, the typical jobs, a project you did, an access or parking reality particular to that area.

What is free and what is not. The profile configuration, the service areas, and the review process are things you can genuinely do yourself and we will tell you so. What we are paid for is the technical foundation, the page structure that does not compete with itself, and tracking that shows which area produces work.

What we will refuse. Listing an address you do not occupy, renting a mailbox to appear local, or creating additional profiles for areas you serve. Each risks the profile your work depends on, and the downside is not a ranking drop — it is losing the listing.

On price: basic plans start at $1,000, published and national, moving with the state of what exists and how many genuine areas you target. Terms are monthly, cancellable with notice.

Built for Los Angeles’s main industries

entertainment and media production

international trade and logistics

aerospace

Los Angeles County concentrates in entertainment and media production, international trade and logistics, and aerospace, though the service-area question is sharpest among the businesses that serve those industries.

Entertainment and media production. Crews, equipment suppliers, and specialist services travel to set, which makes almost all of them service-area businesses. Local search matters less here than reputation and repeat relationships, so the honest scope is usually small: an accurate profile, good reviews, and a site that confirms credibility. Anyone selling an aggressive local programme into this sector is overscoping.

International trade and logistics. Businesses serving the ports operate across a wide corridor, and the service-area configuration matters because buyers search for coverage rather than proximity. Being findable for a corridor you genuinely cover beats claiming the whole county, and the reviews that matter come from operational contacts rather than consumers.

Aerospace. Mostly not a local search category at all — procurement contacts are not using the map. If your buyers are institutional, the profile should be accurate and then you should spend your money on capability content instead. We will say so rather than sell you local work you do not need.

Downtown LA, Hollywood, Santa Monica and Sherman Oaks also behave as distinct markets, and a mobile business genuinely covering several of them needs honest area pages rather than a profile pinned to a rented address in each.

Questions from Los Angeles business owners

How much does local SEO cost in Los Angeles?

Basic plans start at $1,000, moving with the state of what already exists and how many genuine service areas you target. It is not priced by the size of the county. A single service-area business with a clean profile is a genuinely small engagement. Full pricing here.

Should we hide our address if we work from home?

Yes, if you do not receive customers there. A correctly configured service-area profile with the address hidden competes normally and is the intended setup for a mobile business. Displaying a home address you do not serve customers at, or renting a mailbox to appear local, puts the profile at risk of suspension — and losing the listing entirely is a much worse outcome than any ranking concern.

Do you have an office in Los Angeles?

No. Our office is in Salt Lake City and we work with Los Angeles businesses remotely. We do not list addresses we do not occupy — which is precisely the rule this page is asking you to apply to your own listing.

Should we claim the whole county as our service area?

Usually not. A smaller, genuine area with strong signals outperforms an enormous declared one you cannot support, and it produces enquiries worth having rather than jobs an hour and a half away in traffic. Declare where you actually want to work and are actually competitive, then extend it deliberately if that changes.
