Affordable Web Design in Boston
Most of your content already exists somewhere. Paying to write it again is the avoidable half of the bill.
Covering Back Bay, Seaport, South End and the rest of Suffolk County.
You are probably sitting on the content you are about to buy
Boston has roughly 654,000 residents as of 2023 and an economy built on organisations that produce written material constantly — research groups, universities, biotech firms, advisory practices. People here write for a living more than in almost any comparable city. Then they commission a website and are quoted several thousand dollars for copywriting.
Sometimes that is the right purchase. Frequently it is not, because the material already exists in a form nobody thought of as website content: conference talks, grant applications, capability statements, published papers, internal explainers, the email you send every new client explaining how the engagement works. That last one is often the best page on the finished site, and it was written two years ago by someone who is still on staff.
Content is the largest variable in what a website costs. So the cheapest honest thing a web designer can do is look at what you already own before quoting to produce more of it. Very few do, because the copywriting line is the profitable one.

The content audit, and what the rest costs
Basic plans start at $1,000. Published, national, and the same figure for a Suffolk County business as anywhere else. That assumes you supply the copy.
If we write it, budget roughly $150 to $300 a page depending on how much research it needs. On a fifteen-page site that is a meaningful share of the total, which is exactly why the audit below is worth an hour of your time before you commit to any of it.
What usually already exists. Capability statements and boilerplate from proposals. Conference or seminar material, which is normally your clearest explanation of what you do because you had to say it out loud. The standard onboarding email. FAQ answers your team writes repeatedly. Published abstracts and summaries. Case notes that can be anonymised. In most organisations this covers a substantial fraction of the site.
What genuinely needs writing. The home page, almost always — it has to do a job nothing internal was written for. Service pages usually need restructuring rather than composing, because the raw material exists but is organised for a different reader. And anything where the existing text is written for peers when the site’s visitor is a buyer.
What editing costs versus writing. Considerably less, and we will tell you which category each page falls into before you decide. A page assembled from your own material and edited properly reads more credibly than one written from a questionnaire, because the specifics are real.
What moves the price up otherwise. Page count first — a five-page site and a thirty-page site are different information architectures, not the same one scaled. Then integrations: a CRM, payments, booking, or a system with an awkward API.
The hidden cost of the low-bid build is unchanged by any of this: no conversion path, no working tracking, a platform with no export, and a full replacement in eighteen months. Saving money on content is sensible; saving it on measurement is how you lose the ability to tell whether any of it worked.
Payment. Half at start and half at launch, split further on larger projects if you ask.
Built for Boston’s main industries
higher education
biotechnology and life sciences
financial services
Suffolk County’s economy leans on higher education, biotechnology and life sciences, and financial services — three sectors unusually rich in existing written material.
Higher education. Almost everything is already written, and the problem is the opposite of scarcity: too much text, organised for an internal audience, at a reading level aimed at peers. The work here is selection and restructuring rather than composition. Institutional selling also runs on registrations, contract vehicles, and credentials being confirmable in one visit, which is an organising job rather than a writing one.
Biotechnology and life sciences. Publications, abstracts, and technical summaries are the raw material, and they are frequently the most persuasive content available because the specificity is real. What they need is a layer that lets a non-specialist buyer understand what is on offer without the technical detail being dumbed down or removed. Published claims may also pass regulatory review, so plan the schedule around that rather than around an optimistic assumption.
Financial services. Compliance-approved language already exists and re-writing it invites a second review cycle you do not need. Use what is approved wherever possible; the honest new writing here is usually confined to the pages explaining how you are compensated and what you are licensed to do — which visitors arrive specifically to check.
Back Bay, the Seaport, the South End and Beacon Hill also serve different customer bases, and one page written for all of them speaks clearly to none.
What is included
- A content audit before any writing is quoted — what you already own, and what genuinely needs producing
- Editing and restructuring your existing material where that is the honest option
- A written scope agreed before the build, so the price is fixed rather than estimated
- Custom design rather than a template two organisations in the Seaport already licensed
- Mobile-first build with a real speed budget
- One obvious next step per page: call, quote request, or booking
- Conversion tracking configured and verified firing, not merely installed
- Every existing URL redirected, so a rebuild does not discard visibility you already earned
- Full ownership at handover — code, domain, hosting account, and analytics in your name

How the project runs
Audit
We review what you have now and where enquiries are being lost. You keep the findings either way.
Scope
Fixed price, fixed deliverables, and a launch date, all in writing before work starts.
Build
Design, build, tracking, and follow-up wired together and tested end to end.
Launch
Redirects mapped so you keep your rankings, every form and phone link checked by hand.
On results: we publish no case studies with round-number percentage gains and an unnamed client. They cannot be verified, which is exactly why they are written that way. Ask on a call and we will walk through real projects with real context, including the ones that underperformed and why.
What goes in writing: a fixed price against an agreed scope, a launch date, conversion tracking that demonstrably fires, and a monthly report you can read in five minutes. The full process is here, week by week.
Questions from Boston business owners
How much does web design cost in Boston?
Basic plans start at $1,000 assuming you supply the copy, rising with page count and integrations. If we write the content, budget roughly $150 to $300 a page. The price is national and carries no Boston premium. Full breakdown here.
What existing material can actually be used on a website?
More than most people expect. Capability statements and proposal boilerplate, conference or seminar material, the onboarding email you send every new client, answers your team writes repeatedly, and published abstracts. The talk and the onboarding email are usually the two best sources, because both forced you to explain the work plainly to someone who was not already convinced.
Do you have an office in Boston?
No. Our office is in Salt Lake City and we work with Boston organisations remotely, over video calls and shared documents. We do not list addresses we do not occupy, so it is better said plainly here than discovered later.
Is content assembled from our own material worse than professionally written copy?
Usually the reverse, provided it is edited properly. Material you already produced contains real specifics — actual methods, actual constraints, actual examples — which is precisely what a writer working from a questionnaire cannot invent. What it needs is restructuring for a reader who is deciding rather than a peer who is already informed, and that is a smaller job than writing from nothing.
