Austin businesses rebuild too often, and the rebuild is the real cost

Austin has roughly 980,000 residents as of 2023 and a business culture that rewards moving quickly, which is mostly a good thing and occasionally an expensive one. The expensive version shows up in websites. It is common here to meet a company on its third site in five years, having paid three times for something that could have been paid for once and extended twice.

The cycle is familiar. Version one is a fast, cheap build to get something live. It works, in the narrow sense that it exists. Then the business changes — a new service line, a new audience, a genuine need for booking or payments — and the site cannot absorb any of it, because it was built on a platform where structural change means starting over. So version two gets commissioned, usually at a higher price, and the clock restarts.

Affordable, on any timescale longer than a quarter, means the site can take the next change without a rebuild. That is a decision made in week one about structure and ownership, and it costs nothing extra to make correctly. It only becomes expensive when it was made wrongly and you are now paying for the third version.

Affordable · price transparency

Priced once, extended twice

Basic plans start at $1,000. Published, and the same number nationally. Austin agency rates have moved a long way in a decade; ours have not moved because of where your office is, since your zip code does not change how long the work takes.

What raises the number. Page count first — five pages and thirty pages are different information architectures, not the same one scaled up. Then integrations: a CRM, payments, booking, or a scheduling tool with an unhelpful API. Then content, at roughly $150 to $300 a page if we write it instead of you. Every one of those is agreed in writing before anything is built.

What the price includes that low-bid builds do not. A structure that survives growth: pages added without a redesign, a content model that accommodates a new service line, and no proprietary builder standing between you and a change. This is the part that decides whether year two is an edit or a rebuild, and it is invisible on a quote comparison, which is exactly why it gets dropped.

The hidden cost, stated plainly. A $500 site with no conversion path, no working tracking, and no export costs $500 once and then costs you eighteen months of traffic you could not measure, followed by the full price of replacing it. Against that, a build you extend rather than replace is not the expensive option — it is the one you only buy once.

Payment. Half at start and half at launch as standard, split further on larger projects if you ask. It is a routine request and the answer is usually yes.

And if your budget is genuinely a couple of hundred dollars right now, we will say so and point you at a builder that will hold you over. That is a smaller invoice for us and a straight answer for you.

Industries in Travis County

Austin’s commercial base concentrates in technology and software, state government, and music and live entertainment, and the three want almost opposite things from a website.

Technology and software. If you sell into Austin tech, your buyers evaluate interfaces professionally and are unusually intolerant of friction. They want the pricing page, the integration list, and the documentation without a form in the way. Gating basic product facts behind a lead capture reads as a decision made by a marketing department rather than a company confident in its product, and technical buyers respond accordingly.

State government. Selling to agencies is a compliance exercise before it is a marketing one. Registrations, contract vehicles, certifications, and procurement contacts need to be present and easy to verify. The evaluator is working through a checklist, and anything they cannot confirm in one visit becomes a reason to move on rather than a reason to call.

Music and live entertainment. Everything here is dated and time-sensitive, which makes maintenance the real design constraint. If updating a lineup, a date, or a venue takes a developer, it will not get done, and a site advertising last month’s event does more damage than no site at all. This sector needs an editing workflow more than it needs a homepage animation.

The districts diverge too. Downtown, East Austin, South Congress and The Domain support different businesses with different customers, and one generic city page underserves all of them.

On results: we publish no case studies with round-number percentage gains and an unnamed client. They are unverifiable by design and should be read as decoration. Ask on a call and we will walk through real projects with real context, including the ones that underperformed.

What we will put in writing: a fixed price against an agreed scope, a launch date, conversion tracking that demonstrably fires, and a monthly report short enough to actually read. The full process is here, week by week.

Questions from Austin business owners

How much does website design cost in Austin?

Basic plans start at $1,000, rising with page count, integrations, and whether we write the content. The price is national and does not change for Austin. Full breakdown here.

Do you have an office in Austin?

No. Our office is in Salt Lake City and we work with Austin businesses remotely, over video calls and shared documents. We do not list addresses we do not occupy, and we would rather say so here than have you find out later.

We are already on our second site in three years. How is this one different?

Mostly by decisions made in the first week rather than the last. The site is built so pages and services can be added without a redesign, you own the code and every account outright, and there is no proprietary builder to migrate off. Businesses rarely rebuild because the design aged — they rebuild because the platform could not absorb a change the business needed to make.

Can we update the site ourselves after launch?

Yes, and for anything with dates on it you should. Content you change often is set up so it can be edited without a developer, because a maintenance path that requires calling us is a maintenance path that will not be used. We will show you exactly how it works before handover.
