Best Web Design in Charlotte
Six checks you can run yourself, from outside, before you take anyone’s call — including ours.
Verify the claims rather than weighing the pitch
Charlotte has around 911,000 residents as of 2023 and a professional services culture, built around banking, where diligence is a normal part of buying anything. That instinct usually gets suspended for web design, because most buyers do not know what to check. So the decision falls back to the pitch, the portfolio screenshots, and how confident the person sounded.
Every one of those is a presentation artefact. A portfolio image proves a design was mocked up, not that it launched, not that the client kept it, and not that it performs. Confidence is free. And no provider can honestly call itself the best — the phrase has no test attached, which is why it survives.
What can be tested is everything below. Six checks, all runnable from your own desk in under half an hour, none requiring the provider’s cooperation or permission. Run them on every firm on your list. Run them on us; the page tells you what you will find.
Six checks, and what ours return
1. Open the portfolio sites live, not as images. Type the client’s name into a search engine and visit the actual site. The two things you are looking for: does it still exist, and is it still the design shown? A portfolio full of work the clients have since replaced is a portfolio of relationships that ended. Ask us for live URLs on a call and we will send them, including ones where the client has since made changes we would not have made.
2. Run their own site through PageSpeed Insights, mobile tab. The desktop score flatters everything, which is why it is the one people quote. A web design firm whose own site is slow on mobile has told you what its engineering standards are, and no explanation improves on that data point.
3. Look up who owns the domain on a site they built. A public WHOIS lookup takes thirty seconds. If the agency is the registrant rather than the client, that is a firm that holds its clients’ assets. Every domain, hosting account, analytics property, and repository we deliver is registered to the client, at handover.
4. Ask for a reference whose project went badly. Everyone can produce a happy client. The revealing question is what happens when something goes wrong — a missed date, a scope disagreement, a launch defect — and a firm that claims never to have had one is either new or not being straight with you.
5. Read the contract termination clause before the price. Who owns the work if you stop halfway? What notice is required? Is there a buyout? The exit terms describe the relationship far more accurately than the sales conversation does.
6. Check whether the price exists before you call. A number that only materialises after a discovery call is a number priced against your reaction to it. Basic plans start at $1,000, published, identical nationally, and the same figure a business in any other market sees.
Two claims that should fail your check automatically: a guaranteed ranking position, which nobody controls, and a local office you cannot find any independent evidence of. Both are common, and both are quickly disproved by someone actually looking.

Charlotte industries we work with
Mecklenburg County’s economy centres on banking and financial services, energy, and motorsports and manufacturing, and each changes which of the six checks carries the most weight.
Banking and financial services. Published copy here often passes through compliance, which makes check five — the contract terms — unusually important, since schedule slippage caused by review cycles is where disputes start. Visitors are also arriving pre-researched, checking registrations and how you are compensated, so the site’s job is confirmation rather than persuasion. Ambiguity sends people to a competitor who was clearer.
Energy. The buyers are procurement and operations staff comparing vendors on capability, coverage, and compliance record. Enquiry volume is low and contract values are high, which makes portfolio verification worth more than usual: you want evidence the provider has built for a considered, technical purchase rather than for consumer traffic.
Motorsports and manufacturing. The corridor around Charlotte supports a dense supplier base where the visitor is working from a requirements list — processes, tolerances, materials, turnaround. Information architecture decides these enquiries. A supplier site that buries its capability list under a brand narrative loses to a plainer competitor that put it on the first screen.
Uptown, South End, NoDa and Ballantyne also support quite different customer bases, and a provider proposing one generic city page for all of them has not examined the market.
What is included

- Domain, hosting account, analytics property, and code all registered to you at handover
- A written scope naming every page before the build starts
- Revision rounds specified up front rather than negotiated later

Proof
Held to our own checklist: we publish no case studies with round-number percentage gains and an anonymous client, because check one is the whole reason — an unnamed client cannot be verified, so the number is worth nothing. Ask on a call and we will name real projects, send live URLs, and go through the ones that went badly.
What we put in writing: a fixed price against an agreed scope, a launch date, tracking that demonstrably fires, and a monthly report you can read in five minutes. What we never put in writing is a ranking promise. The full process is here.
Questions from Charlotte business owners
How do I check a web design company in Charlotte before hiring them?
Six things, about half an hour, no cooperation needed from them: open their portfolio sites live rather than as images, run their own site through PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab, do a WHOIS lookup on a client domain to see who the registrant is, ask for a reference whose project went badly, read the termination clause before the price, and check whether a price exists publicly at all.
How much does web design cost in Charlotte?
Basic plans start at $1,000, rising with page count, integrations, and whether we write the content. It is published rather than assembled after a call, which is the sixth check on the list above. Full breakdown here.
Do you have an office in Charlotte?
No. Our office is in Salt Lake City and we work with Charlotte businesses remotely, over video calls and shared documents. We say so plainly because a claimed local office that cannot be independently verified is one of the two claims this page tells you to reject on sight.
Is a portfolio of big-name clients a good signal?
Only if you can confirm what the firm actually did. Large projects have many contributors, and “worked with” can mean anything from leading the build to supplying one page template. Open the sites, ask specifically which parts were theirs, and ask who they reported to. A straight answer to that question is a better signal than the logo itself.
