A portfolio is a selection, and you are not told the selection rate

Fort Worth has roughly 978,000 residents as of 2023 and a business base — aerospace suppliers, logistics operators, energy services — that is used to auditing performance rather than accepting a summary. Sampling bias is a familiar concept in all three. Then the same buyer looks at a web design portfolio, which is pure selection, and treats it as evidence.

A portfolio shows the best work a firm has ever produced, for the clients most willing to be named, presented at the moment it looked strongest. That is a legitimate marketing document and a useless basis for prediction. It tells you what the firm is capable of at its peak. It tells you nothing about what it typically delivers, which is the thing you are actually buying.

No firm can honestly call itself the best. But there is a request that turns a selected sample into something close to a random one, it takes a sentence, and remarkably few buyers make it: ask for the last three projects rather than the best three.

What is included — and what usually is not

The request, and how to read the answer

Ask: "What were the last three sites you launched, in order, whatever they were?" Not the last three you are proud of. The last three. This converts a curated selection into something approaching a random sample of current output, and current output is what you are buying — not the standout project from four years ago that anchors the portfolio.

Read the consistency, not the peak. Are all three roughly comparable in quality, or is there a wide spread? A firm producing consistent work at a good-enough standard is a much safer purchase than one whose range runs from excellent to indifferent, because you have no way to know in advance which end of that range your budget buys.

Read the sector spread. If all three are in a sector unlike yours, ask what they had to learn last time they worked in one they did not know. The answer distinguishes a firm that researches from one that applies the same structure regardless.

Watch the response to the request itself. Some hesitation is normal — a client may be unlaunched or under an agreement. A firm that redirects entirely to its showcase, or explains why the recent work is unrepresentative, has answered you without meaning to.

Then run the ordinary checks on all three. Open them live rather than as screenshots. Run PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab, which is the one that matters and the one nobody quotes. Try the contact form. Look at whether the pages say something specific or could describe any competitor in that industry.

What we will send. The last three, in order, on request — including any where the client has since made changes we would not have made, and any where we would now do something differently. That is a less flattering document than a portfolio and a considerably more useful one.

On price: basic plans start at $1,000, published nationally, moving with page count, integrations, and whether we write the content at roughly $150 to $300 a page.

Industries in Tarrant County

Tarrant County’s economy runs on aerospace and defense manufacturing, logistics and distribution, and energy — all three sectors where sampling is understood well enough that this request should feel natural.

Aerospace and defense manufacturing. Buyers work from a requirements list, so what you are checking in those three recent sites is whether capability information is precise and findable in one screen. Vague capability pages are the most common failure here, and they are visible instantly on any recent example. If none of the three is a technical or industrial client, ask directly how the firm handles specification-led content.

Logistics and distribution. The Alliance corridor supports a large operational services layer where speed is a commercial constraint. Run the mobile speed check on all three recent sites — if the firm builds fast sites, it will be true across all of them, and if it is true of only the showcase project you have learned exactly what the portfolio was concealing.

Energy. Low enquiry volume and high contract values mean credibility carries the site. Look at whether the recent examples make specific, checkable claims or generic ones. This sector is also frequently subject to supplier diligence, so consistency of standards across a firm’s output matters more than its best single result.

Sundance Square, the Cultural District, the Near Southside and Alliance also support different customer bases, and a firm proposing one page for all of them has told you something before you look at any work.

Held to our own request: we publish no case studies with round-number percentage gains and an anonymous client — a selected, unverifiable result is precisely what this page argues against. Ask on a call and we will send the last three launches in order, with live URLs, including the ones we would now build differently.

What we will put in writing: a fixed price against an agreed scope, a launch date, tracking that demonstrably fires, and a monthly report you can read in five minutes. What we will never put in writing is a ranking promise. The full process is here.

Questions from Fort Worth business owners

How do I compare website design firms in Fort Worth?

Ask each one for its last three launches in order, whatever they were, rather than its best three. That converts a curated portfolio into something close to a random sample of current output. Then check consistency rather than the peak — a firm producing steady good-enough work is a safer purchase than one whose range runs from excellent to indifferent, because you cannot know in advance which end your project lands on.

How much does website design cost in Fort Worth?

Basic plans start at $1,000, rising with page count, integrations, and whether we write the content. The price is national and published rather than assembled after a discovery call. Full breakdown here.

Do you have an office in Fort Worth?

No. Our office is in Salt Lake City and we work with Fort Worth businesses remotely, over video calls and shared documents. We do not list addresses we do not occupy, so it is better stated here than discovered later.

What if a firm cannot show recent work because of confidentiality?

That is a legitimate answer in some sectors and it should be specific rather than general — one named client under agreement, not a blanket policy. If genuinely nothing recent can be shown, ask instead for the technical standards applied to every project: performance budget, tracking, redirects, and who owns the accounts. Those are answerable without naming anyone, and a firm with consistent standards can describe them immediately.
