Comparing quotes?

Three things worth checking on every quote you have, ours included:

  • Who writes the content, and is it in the price?
  • Is conversion tracking configured, or just analytics pasted in?
  • Who owns the code, domain, and accounts at the end?

Best · selection criteria and proof

Seven standards, all testable today

1. Loads in under about two and a half seconds on a phone on cellular. Not on office wifi. Turn wifi off and count.

2. States what you do, for whom, and where, in the first line of text. Cover everything below the headline and show it to someone unfamiliar with your business. If they hesitate, it fails.

3. One obvious next step per page, repeated. Not five competing calls to action. A page offering a call, a form, a chat widget, a newsletter, and a download is asking the visitor to make a decision before they have made the first one.

4. Tappable phone number visible without scrolling on mobile. A number rendered inside an image fails this, and it is common.

5. Passes basic accessibility. Contrast sufficient to read in sunlight, real text rather than text in images, labelled form fields, and keyboard navigation that works. This overlaps almost entirely with good SEO and reduces a genuine legal exposure in this state.

6. Says something specific about price. A starting figure, a range, or a worked example. Complete silence filters your enquiries in the wrong direction.

7. Conversion tracking that fires. Submit your own form and confirm both that the message arrives and that the event is recorded. Most sites fail one half of this and nobody notices for months.

Good design is measurable. Most of it is not a matter of taste

Arguments about website design usually collapse into taste, which is convenient for whoever is being paid. But most of what decides whether a site works is measurable, and you can run the measurements yourself without any design training at all.

This matters more in New York than in most markets, because in a city of roughly 8.3 million people as of 2023 the design floor is high. Your competitors' sites look fine. Looking fine is table stakes, not an advantage, and the differences that produce enquiries sit underneath the visual layer.

Here are the seven standards worth holding a site to. Run them on your current site first — the results usually explain the enquiry volume better than any redesign conversation would.

New York industries we work with

Which of the seven standards carries most weight depends on your audience, and New York’s financial services, media and advertising, and healthcare concentrations pull in different directions.

Financial services. Standard six is the awkward one. Fee structures are often genuinely complex, but "contact us to discuss" reads as evasion to a sceptical audience. A worked example usually threads the needle where a price list cannot.

Media and advertising. Standard one and standard three. This audience abandons quickly and judges you on execution. It is also the sector most likely to have broken standard one in pursuit of a visual effect.

Healthcare. Standard five, without question. An older or impaired patient population makes contrast, type size, and keyboard navigation into conversion features rather than compliance chores — and across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and The Bronx that population is substantial.

One structural note for New York: the boroughs behave as separate search markets. A site that measures well on all seven but never names the area it serves will still lose to a weaker site that does.

How the project runs

Audit

We review what you have now and where enquiries are being lost. You keep the findings either way.

Scope

Fixed price, fixed deliverables, and a launch date, all in writing before work starts.

Build

Design, build, tracking, and follow-up wired together and tested end to end.

Launch

Redirects mapped so you keep your rankings, every form and phone link checked by hand.

How we hold ourselves to it: every build is tested against these before launch, on a throttled mobile connection, with the real forms submitted and the tracking checked. Not a claim — a step in the process, and you can watch it happen.

We will not tell you we design better than anyone else in New York. We will tell you that the seven standards above are the ones that decide whether a site earns anything, and that they are checkable. We will run them on your current site free.

Questions from New York business owners

What makes website design "good" rather than just attractive?

Attractive is a prerequisite in a market like New York, not a differentiator. Good means it loads fast, says what you do immediately, offers one clear next step, works for people with impairments, and records what happens. Those are measurable; attractiveness mostly is not.

My site fails several of these. Do I need a full redesign?

Usually not. Standards two, three, four, six, and seven are copy and configuration changes that can be made on almost any platform in a couple of days. Only one and five sometimes require rebuilding, and only when the platform itself is the constraint.

How much does a website that meets all seven cost in New York?

Basic plans start at $1,000, and meeting these standards is included rather than an upgrade — they are baseline competence. What raises a quote is page count, integrations, and content. Full detail.

Does accessibility really affect enquiries?

Yes, and disproportionately in sectors serving older customers. Beyond that, the same fixes improve how search engines read the page, and they reduce a real litigation risk — New York sees a meaningful share of website accessibility claims nationally.
