Custom Web Design in Chicago
The website talks to your existing systems, including the ones nobody wants to replace.
- An investigation of what your existing system can actually expose, before anything is quoted
- Integration scoped and priced separately rather than assumed into a website quote
- Scheduled sync into the site’s own store rather than live queries against a legacy system
- Read-only integrations where that removes the manual work, without write-back risk

| Included with us | Typical budget build |
|---|---|
| An investigation of what your existing system can actually expose, before anything is quoted | Template you will recognise on three competitor sites |
| Integration scoped and priced separately rather than assumed into a website quote | Analytics pasted in, no conversions defined |
| Scheduled sync into the site’s own store rather than live queries against a legacy system | Forms email an inbox nobody monitors |
| Read-only integrations where that removes the manual work, without write-back risk | Unoptimised images, slow on cellular |
| Graceful behaviour when the source system is unavailable — last known good, not an error | Built on a platform the site cannot leave |
| Anything writing back recorded on the site first, then delivered, so failures lose notifications and not orders | No redirect mapping — rankings reset at launch |
| Conversion tracking configured and verified firing, not merely installed | Support ends when the invoice clears |
| Full ownership at handover — code, repository, domain, hosting account, and analytics in your name | Template you will recognise on three competitor sites |

The constraint is usually the system you already have
Chicago has roughly 2.66 million residents as of 2023 and an economy full of companies running software that predates the modern web — an ERP installed in the nineties, a dispatch system with a client application, an inventory database maintained by one person who understands it. These systems work, they are load-bearing, and replacing them is not on anyone’s roadmap.
That is the real reason websites here stay disconnected. Orders get re-keyed. Stock levels on the site are a spreadsheet someone updates weekly. A dealer enquiry arrives by email and is typed into another system by hand. Everyone knows it is wasteful, and every proposal to fix it arrives as a proposal to replace the underlying system, which is not going to happen.
Custom, in this context, is almost entirely about integration rather than appearance. The question is not whether the site looks bespoke; it is whether it can talk to what you already run. A template platform cannot, and that limitation — not the design — is what keeps a manual process in place for another decade.

How legacy integration actually gets scoped
First, find out what the system can actually expose. This is the step that decides the cost, and it has to happen before anyone quotes. A documented REST API is an afternoon. A SOAP endpoint from 2004 is a week. A nightly CSV export to an FTP directory is workable and unglamorous, and it is frequently the right answer. A system with nothing but a client application and a database nobody wants touched is a different conversation entirely.
Be honest that read-only is often enough. The highest-value integrations are usually one-directional: the site displays current stock, current equipment, current locations, pulled from the system of record. Writing back into a legacy system is where risk and cost concentrate, and a great deal of manual work disappears without it.
Scheduled sync beats live queries in most cases. A nightly or hourly pull into the website’s own store is more robust, faster for visitors, and does not put load on a system that was never designed to serve web traffic. Live queries against a legacy database are how a marketing campaign takes down an internal system, and that is not a hypothetical failure mode.
Design for the system being unavailable. If the sync fails, the site shows the last known good data with an appropriate caveat rather than an error. Legacy systems have maintenance windows and the website should not go down with them.
Anything writing back gets a queue and a reconciliation. A web enquiry that must reach your dispatch or CRM system should be recorded on the website first, then delivered — so a failure loses a notification rather than an order. That ordering is deliberate and it is what makes an integration safe to rely on.
What it costs. Basic plans start at $1,000 for the site, published and national. Integration work is scoped and priced separately once we have seen what the system exposes, because quoting it blind is how these projects overrun. That investigation is a small, defined piece of work and it is worth doing before you commit to anything.
Local industries, local search behaviour
Cook County’s economy runs on finance and derivatives trading, manufacturing, and transportation and logistics — three sectors with deep legacy estates and very different integration constraints.
Finance and derivatives trading. The systems are well maintained and the constraint is governance rather than capability. Any connection between a public website and internal systems will be reviewed, which makes the read-only, scheduled-sync pattern strongly preferable — it is far easier to get approved than anything that opens a path inward, and it usually delivers the whole benefit.
Manufacturing. Product and specification data typically lives in an ERP or a PLM system, and the site’s value is in rendering it accurately and keeping it current. This is the clearest case in the city for a nightly sync: specifications change rarely, accuracy matters enormously, and stale published specifications cause real problems with buyers.
Transportation and logistics. Dispatch and tracking systems are operational and continuously in use, which makes putting web traffic anywhere near them a bad idea. Sync out, never query in, and design the site to keep working through the system’s maintenance windows — because your customers are active at hours when those windows fall.
The Loop, River North, Lincoln Park and the West Loop support different businesses, but the pattern is consistent: the website is new, the system of record is old, and the integration is where the value is.

Questions from Chicago business owners
How much does custom web design cost in Chicago?
Basic plans start at $1,000 for the site, rising with page count and content. Integration with an existing system is scoped and priced separately after a short investigation of what that system can expose — quoting it blind is the single most reliable way for these projects to overrun. Full breakdown here.
Our internal system is old and we cannot replace it. Is integration still possible?
Usually yes, and it rarely requires touching the system. If it can produce an export — even a nightly CSV to an FTP directory — that is enough for the site to display current data, and a scheduled sync is more robust than a live connection anyway. The investigation step establishes what is available before anyone commits to an approach.
Do you have an office in Chicago?
No. Our office is in Salt Lake City and we work with Chicago businesses remotely, over video calls and shared documents. We do not list addresses we do not occupy, so it is better said plainly here than discovered later.
Is it safe to connect a public website to an internal system?
It is safe when the direction is right. Pulling data out on a schedule into the website’s own store is low risk and is what we default to. Live queries from a public site into an internal system are the pattern to avoid — that is how a busy day on the website becomes a load problem on an operational system. Where something genuinely must write back, it should be queued and reconciled rather than sent directly.

A different angle on the same thing
On results: we publish no case studies with round-number percentage lifts and an anonymous client — unverifiable by construction. Ask on a call and we will walk through real integrations with real context, including ones where the investigation concluded the system could not usefully expose anything and we said so.
What we will commit to in writing: a fixed price against an agreed scope, a separately scoped integration, a launch date, tracking that demonstrably fires, and a monthly report you can read in five minutes. The full process is here, week by week.
