Custom Web Design in Los Angeles
Custom design, custom build, and custom functionality are three different things at three different prices.
Questions from Los Angeles business owners
What does "custom web design" actually mean?
Three different things. Custom design on a standard platform means original visuals implemented on a theme or builder. Custom build means hand-written code and structure, usually with conventional design patterns. Custom functionality means behaviour that does not exist off the shelf, which is software development. Ask every quote which one it is — specifically, whether the underlying build is hand-written or on a platform, and which platform.
How much does custom web design cost in Los Angeles?
Basic plans start at $1,000, rising with page count, integrations, and whether we write the content. The price is national — there is no Los Angeles rate, because the work does not take longer here. Full breakdown here.
Do you have an office in Los Angeles?
No. Our office is in Salt Lake City and we work with Los Angeles businesses remotely, over video calls and shared documents. We do not list addresses we do not occupy, and we would rather say so here than have you find out later.
Is a custom-designed site on a builder platform a bad purchase?
Not at all, and for plenty of businesses it is the right one. It becomes a problem only when you later need something the platform cannot do, because at that point the visual work does not carry across — you rebuild the structure and redo the design against it. The way to avoid paying twice is to be honest at the start about whether your needs are visual or structural.
The word covers three separate purchases
Los Angeles has around 3.8 million residents as of 2023 and a deep bench of design talent, which means the word "custom" gets used here constantly and imprecisely. Almost every quote you receive will describe itself as custom. Very few will say which kind, and the three kinds differ by an order of magnitude in cost.
This produces the most common disappointment in the industry. Someone pays for what they believe is a bespoke site and receives a well-executed theme with original visuals — which is genuinely custom design, and genuinely not custom code. Or the reverse: they pay for a hand-built site and are surprised there was no discovery process behind the visual direction. Neither party lied. They were discussing different products using one word.
So before comparing any two quotes, establish which of the three each one is offering. It takes one question per quote and it is the difference between comparing prices and comparing unrelated things.
What is included
A clear statement of which of the three you are buying, before you commit
A hand-built structure you own outright, not a licensed platform
Conventional, tested patterns for navigation, forms, and accessibility
Original design work where it changes the outcome rather than everywhere
Any custom functionality specified in writing before it is priced
Direct integration with the CRM or booking tools you already run
Conversion tracking configured and verified firing, not merely installed
Full ownership — code, repository, domain, hosting account, and analytics in your name
Custom · bespoke vs template
The three, and what each is worth
1. Custom design, standard build. Original visual work — layout, typography, colour, imagery — implemented on an existing theme or builder. The site is visually yours and structurally the platform’s. Worth buying when appearance is the differentiator and your functional needs are ordinary. The limitation is that you inherit the platform’s constraints on speed, integrations, and extensibility, and those are invisible until you hit them.
2. Custom build, standard design language. Hand-built code and structure, using conventional, tested patterns for navigation, forms, and components. Not visually flamboyant; fast, extensible, integrable, and fully owned. Worth buying when the site has to do things — connect to a CRM, generate pages from data, grow without a redesign. This is what most service businesses actually need and it is the one least often quoted, because it does not demo as impressively as the first.
3. Custom functionality. Behaviour that does not exist off the shelf: a quoting tool, a configurator, a portal, an integration with an internal system. This is software development attached to a website and is priced accordingly. Worth buying when the functionality is the offer. Watch for quotes that include it vaguely — "custom calculator" as a line item with no specification is the single most reliable source of overrun in this industry.
What we do. Mostly the second, with the first layered on top where it earns its place, and the third only when it is well-specified and squarely a website integration rather than an application in its own right.
The question to ask every quote: "Is the underlying build hand-written or on a platform, and which platform?" A direct answer tells you which of the three you are being sold. Hesitation usually means the first while implying the second.
The cost of outgrowing the first. A custom-designed site on a builder is a real asset until you need something the builder cannot do. At that point the visual work does not transfer — you are rebuilding, and the design has to be redone against a new structure. That is the specific bill people do not see coming.
Basic plans start at $1,000, published and national, rising with page count, integrations, and whether we write the content at roughly $150 to $300 a page.

Industries around Los Angeles
Los Angeles County concentrates in entertainment and media production, international trade and logistics, and aerospace, and the right choice among the three differs sharply.
Entertainment and media production. The strongest case in the city for the first option — visual execution genuinely is the credential, and a beautifully designed site on a capable platform may be exactly right. The caveat is performance: this sector’s content is heavy, and builder platforms handle large media badly. If your reel takes eight seconds to become watchable, the visual investment is being undone by the structural choice.
International trade and logistics. Squarely the second. Buyers are operational, frequently international, often on poor connections, and they want coverage, capacity, hours, and a phone number immediately. Speed and integration matter; visual distinction does almost nothing. Money spent on the first option here is money spent on something the audience will not notice.
Aerospace. The second, occasionally with elements of the third. Capability, certification, and specification data belong in a structure that renders them consistently and keeps them current — which is a data problem. Where a supplier has a genuine configurator or specification lookup, that is the third option and should be specified in detail before anyone prices it.
Downtown LA, Hollywood, Santa Monica and Sherman Oaks also serve different customers, and the right option can differ between two businesses on the same street.
On results: we publish no case studies with round-number percentage lifts and an anonymous client. They cannot be verified, which is why they read so well and mean so little. Ask on a call and we will walk through real projects with real context, including ones where we recommended the first option and did not do the build.
What we will commit to in writing: a fixed price against an agreed scope, a launch date, conversion tracking that demonstrably fires, and a monthly report you can read in five minutes. The full process is here, week by week.
