In LA the visual bar is already high. The engineering bar is not

Los Angeles has around 3.8 million residents as of 2023 and probably the deepest concentration of visual talent in the country. One consequence is that a beautiful website here is not a differentiator — it is the floor. Nearly every competitor you have already cleared it, often with a designer who genuinely knows what they are doing.

What has not kept pace is what sits underneath. It is entirely routine in this market to find a gorgeous site that ships six megabytes of hero video, fails a contrast check on its own navigation, publishes no structured data at all, and stores its contact form submissions somewhere nobody has checked since launch. None of that is visible in a screenshot. All of it decides whether the site works.

So “professional” needs a definition that is not a compliment. The version below is made entirely of things a stranger can verify from outside your organisation, without your cooperation, in about twenty minutes. That is the point: a standard you cannot check is a standard you are being asked to believe.

Professional · credibility and technical standard

The definition, item by item

A performance budget, set in numbers. Not “fast” — a stated ceiling on page weight and a target for how quickly the largest element on screen finishes rendering, enforced during the build rather than measured afterwards and apologised for. The most common failure in this city is a homepage carrying an autoplaying video that nobody costed. Test any site yourself with PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab; the desktop score flatters everything.

Accessibility as a build requirement. Contrast ratios that pass, every image carrying meaningful alternative text, forms whose labels are attached to their fields, a page navigable end to end with a keyboard, and headings in an order that makes sense to a screen reader. In California this is also a live commercial risk rather than an ideal — accessibility complaints against business websites are common enough here that treating the standard as optional is a decision with a cost attached.

Valid structured data. Schema describing the organisation, the services, the location, and any FAQ content, validated rather than assumed. It is what allows a search engine to state facts about you confidently, and it is missing or malformed on a startling proportion of expensive sites. Google’s Rich Results Test will tell you in seconds.

Security handled as maintenance. HTTPS everywhere with no mixed content, dependencies actually updated, forms protected against automated abuse, and backups that have been restored at least once to prove they work. An untested backup is a belief.

Ownership, all four pieces. Code, domain registration, hosting account, and analytics property, each in your name. If the agency holds any of them, the relationship contains leverage you did not agree to.

Support with a stated response time. Not “we’re always here” — a written window for what happens when the site goes down, and who answers.

Against the site a relative built: the difference is rarely taste, and saying so is not a slight on their work. It is that these seven items were never on anyone’s list. The build was scoped as an appearance, so it delivered one.

Basic plans start at $1,000, published nationally. The standards above are not an upgrade tier; a build that omits them is not less expensive, only less finished.

What is included

  • A performance budget agreed before the build and enforced during it
  • Accessibility built in: contrast, alt text, labelled form fields, keyboard navigation, sane heading order
  • Validated structured data for the organisation, services, location, and FAQs
  • HTTPS with no mixed content, updated dependencies, and form abuse protection
  • Backups that have been restored at least once to prove they work
  • Ownership of code, domain, hosting account, and analytics — all four, in your name
  • A written support response window, rather than an assurance
  • Conversion tracking configured and verified firing before launch
  • Every existing URL redirected, so a rebuild does not discard search equity

Los Angeles industries we work with

Los Angeles County’s economy concentrates in entertainment and media production, international trade and logistics, and aerospace, and the standards above land differently in each.

Entertainment and media production. This is the sector where the performance budget does the most work, because the content is inherently heavy — reels, stills, sizzle edits. The discipline is not using less of it; it is loading it correctly, so the page is interactive before the video has finished arriving. A production company whose own site takes eleven seconds to become usable has made a statement about its technical judgement that no reel offsets.

International trade and logistics. Traffic through the San Pedro Bay ports supports an enormous services layer, and those buyers are operational, often international, and frequently on poor connections. Page weight is a commercial constraint here, and structured data matters more than usual because it is what lets a search engine present your coverage and hours accurately to someone who will never scroll.

Aerospace. The visitors that matter are working from a requirements list — certifications, processes, tolerances, past performance. The relevant standards are structured data and information architecture rather than visual design, because the job is to let a procurement engineer confirm you qualify without sending an email to ask.

Downtown LA, Hollywood, Santa Monica and Sherman Oaks also behave as distinct local markets, and a single city page written for all four generally speaks clearly to none of them.

How the project runs

Audit

We review what you have now and where enquiries are being lost. You keep the findings either way.

Scope

Fixed price, fixed deliverables, and a launch date, all in writing before work starts.

Build

Design, build, tracking, and follow-up wired together and tested end to end.

Launch

Redirects mapped so you keep your rankings, every form and phone link checked by hand.

On results: we publish no anonymous case studies and no percentage lifts. By the logic of this page they would be exactly the kind of unverifiable claim it argues against — you cannot test them from outside. Ask on a call and we will go through real projects with real context, including the ones that did not work.

What we will put in writing: a fixed price against an agreed scope, a launch date, a performance budget, tracking that demonstrably fires, and a monthly report you can read in five minutes. The full process is here, week by week.

Questions from Los Angeles business owners

How can I tell whether our current site meets these standards?

Check it yourself in about twenty minutes. Run PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab, run Google’s Rich Results Test for structured data, tab through the homepage with the keyboard to see whether you can reach the navigation and the form, and ask whoever manages the site to name who owns the domain registration. Four checks, no cooperation required from anyone, and they will tell you most of what you need to know.

How much does professional web design cost in Los Angeles?

Basic plans start at $1,000, rising with page count, integrations, and whether we write the content. The price is national — there is no Los Angeles rate, because the work does not take longer here. Full breakdown here.

Do you have an office in Los Angeles?

No. Our office is in Salt Lake City and we work with Los Angeles businesses remotely, over video calls and shared documents. We do not list addresses we do not occupy — publishing one would fail the same verifiability test this page is built on.

Is accessibility genuinely a legal issue for a California business website?

Website accessibility complaints against businesses are common in California, and we are not lawyers and will not pretend to advise you on exposure. What we will say is that the technical work involved — contrast, alt text, labelled fields, keyboard navigation — costs almost nothing when it is part of the build and a great deal when it is retrofitted under pressure. That is a straightforward engineering argument regardless of where the legal question lands.
