Replacing a site you could have repaired is the expensive mistake
Seattle has roughly 755,000 residents as of 2023 and a business culture that will happily debug a system rather than replace it — nobody here throws away a working service because one endpoint is slow. Websites are the exception. The default response to a site that is underperforming is to rebuild it, and rebuilding is very often the most expensive available answer to a problem that has a cheaper one.
Sites usually underperform for a small number of identifiable reasons: they are slow, there is no obvious next step, the tracking never worked so nobody can see what is failing, or the content does not answer what buyers actually ask. None of those requires a new site. Every one of them can be fixed on the site you already own, frequently in days, frequently for a fraction of a rebuild.
The reason this is rarely offered is straightforward: a repair is a small invoice and a rebuild is a large one. So before quoting you for a replacement, the useful thing is to establish whether you need one — and to say so plainly when you do not.

Repair or replace, and what each costs
Repair is usually right when the site is on a platform you control and can export from, the structure roughly matches what you sell, and the problems are performance, conversion path, tracking, or content. Those are bounded pieces of work with visible results. Fixing page speed, adding a real next step to each page, wiring conversion tracking that actually fires, and rewriting three service pages will change the numbers on most underperforming sites, and none of it requires starting over.
Replace is genuinely right when the site is on a proprietary builder you cannot export from, or the structure no longer matches the business — you have added services or markets it was never designed to hold. It is also right when the codebase is unmaintainable, or when the underlying platform is unpatched and has become a security problem rather than a design one. In those cases repair spends money on something you will still have to replace.
How to tell, before anyone quotes. Run PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab. Submit your own contact form and see whether anything arrives. Check whether analytics records a phone tap as an event. Try to make a small content change yourself. Four checks, half an hour, no cooperation needed — and they will usually tell you which category you are in.
What a rebuild costs if you need one. Basic plans start at $1,000, published and national, rising with page count, integrations, and whether we write the content at roughly $150 to $300 a page. All agreed in writing before anything is built.
What repair costs. Less, and scoped to the specific fixes rather than sold as a package. We will tell you what we think each fix will and will not change, including where we are uncertain.
The hidden cost of an unnecessary rebuild is not only the invoice. It is the search visibility routinely lost when URLs are not mapped across, the tracking history that restarts at zero, and several months during which the business is doing a website project instead of its actual work.
Payment. Half at start and half at launch on a build; repair work is quoted per fix.
Local industries, local search behaviour
King County’s commercial base runs on technology and cloud computing, aerospace, and maritime and logistics, and the repair-or-replace call falls differently in each.
Technology and cloud. These organisations can often do the repairs themselves once someone identifies them, and we will say so — a prioritised fix list handed to an internal team is a legitimate and inexpensive outcome. The genuine trigger for replacement here is usually structural: a marketing site that has drifted out of step with the product, or one built on something the engineering team refuses to maintain.
Aerospace. Supplier sites in this sector fail on findability rather than on age. Certifications, processes, and capabilities exist somewhere on the site but take four clicks to reach. That is an information architecture repair, not a rebuild, and it is one of the highest-return small jobs available in this sector.
Maritime and logistics. Page weight is a commercial constraint, since buyers are frequently on poor connections under time pressure. Speed work on an existing site is bounded, measurable, and usually the single fix that matters most. If the site is on a builder that cannot be made fast, that is the case where replacement earns its cost.
South Lake Union and Ballard serve genuinely different customers, and a site whose structure no longer matches which of those you actually sell to is the clearest signal that repair has run out of road.

Questions from Seattle business owners
How much does website design cost in Seattle?
Basic plans start at $1,000 for a rebuild, rising with page count, integrations, and whether we write the content. Repair work on an existing site is scoped per fix and usually costs considerably less. The price is national and carries no King County premium. Full breakdown here.
How do we know whether we need a new site or just fixes?
Run four checks yourself in about half an hour: PageSpeed Insights on the mobile tab, submit your own contact form and see whether it arrives, check whether analytics records a phone tap as an event, and try to make a small content change. If the problems are speed, conversion path, tracking, or content, those are repairs. If you cannot export from the platform, or the structure no longer matches what you sell, that is a rebuild.
Do you have an office in Seattle?
No. Our office is in Salt Lake City and we work with Seattle businesses remotely, over video calls and shared documents. We do not list addresses we do not occupy, so it is better stated here than discovered later.
Why would you recommend against a rebuild?
Because an unnecessary rebuild costs you more than the invoice. Search visibility is routinely lost when old URLs are not mapped across, the tracking history restarts at zero, and the business spends several months on a website project instead of its actual work. If four bounded fixes will change your numbers, that is the better purchase, and we would rather have the smaller job and the honest conversation.

On results: we publish no case studies with round-number percentage gains and an anonymous client. They cannot be verified, which is why they read so well and mean so little. Ask on a call and we will walk through real projects with real context, including ones where we recommended repair and the client kept their existing site.
What we will put in writing: a fixed price against an agreed scope, a launch date, conversion tracking that demonstrably fires, and a monthly report you can read in five minutes. The full process is here, week by week.
