Comparing quotes?

Three things worth checking on every quote you have, ours included:

  • Who writes the content, and is it in the price?
  • Is conversion tracking configured, or just analytics pasted in?
  • Who owns the code, domain, and accounts at the end?

What each phase costs, and what it should earn first

Basic plans start at $1,000. Published, national, and the same figure for a Marion County business as anywhere else. That covers a real phase one, not a placeholder.

Phase one: the pages that produce enquiries. A home page that says plainly what you do and for whom, one page per core service, a contact route with an obvious next step, and the proof a first-time visitor needs. Built to production standard with tracking configured and verified, because without measurement you cannot decide what phase two should be.

Then wait and read the data. Six to eight weeks of real traffic tells you which service page attracts people, what visitors search before arriving, and where they leave. That information is worth more than any assumption made in a planning meeting, and it is free once tracking is in place. Most businesses discover phase two is not what they would have specified up front.

Phase two: whatever the data says. Usually more depth on the service that converts, sometimes location pages, sometimes a booking flow because the calls are all asking the same scheduling question. Each priced separately against an agreed scope, and each an addition rather than a rebuild.

What makes this possible. The structure is decided at the start — a content model that accommodates new services, a navigation that extends, no proprietary builder standing between you and a change, and ownership of the code and every account. This is invisible on a quote comparison, which is exactly why it gets dropped by a cheaper bid.

The hidden cost of the low-bid build is that phasing becomes impossible. A $500 site typically ships with no tracking, so there is no data to decide phase two from, and on a platform with no export, so growing means starting again. You have not bought a first phase; you have bought something that must be thrown away.

Payment. Half at start and half at launch on each phase, split further on larger phases if you ask.

You do not have to buy the whole site at once

Indianapolis has roughly 879,000 residents as of 2023 and a business culture that is pragmatic about capital — equipment gets bought when it is needed, not in anticipation. Websites are the odd exception. They are almost always specified as one complete project, priced as one number, and delivered as one event, and that framing is what puts them out of reach for businesses that would benefit most.

It does not have to work that way. A website is not a single indivisible object; it is a set of pages that each do a job, and they are not equally urgent. For most service businesses, three or four pages produce nearly all the enquiries and the rest exist because a site is supposed to have them. The gap between those two groups is where phasing lives.

The catch, and the reason phasing has a bad reputation, is that it only works if phase one is built to be extended. Done on a platform that cannot grow, "we will add to it later" means a rebuild, and the staged approach costs more than doing it once. Done properly, the structure is set at the start and later phases are additions rather than replacements. That decision costs nothing extra at the beginning and everything if it is made wrongly.

Indianapolis industries we work with

Marion County’s economy rests on life sciences and pharmaceuticals, logistics and air cargo, and motorsports, and phase one looks different in each.

Life sciences and pharmaceuticals. Buyers are institutional and technical, enquiry volume is low, and the deciding content is specification rather than persuasion. Phase one here is narrow and deep: capability, credentials, and the specific technical facts a procurement contact checks. Broad marketing content can wait indefinitely, and frequently should.

Logistics and air cargo. The city sits on a serious national air freight footprint and the buyers are operational and time-poor. Phase one is coverage, capacity, equipment, hours, and a phone number that loads instantly on a poor connection. This sector rewards a small fast site over a large slow one more clearly than almost any other.

Motorsports. Demand is compressed into a season, which changes the phasing logic entirely: phase one must be live before the season, and phase two should be built from what that season taught you. Everything here is also dated — schedules, results, appearances — so editability without a developer belongs in phase one rather than being deferred.

The Mile Square, Broad Ripple, Fountain Square and Castleton also serve different customer bases, and one generic city page written for all of them speaks clearly to none.

How the project runs

Audit

We review what you have now and where enquiries are being lost. You keep the findings either way.

Scope

Fixed price, fixed deliverables, and a launch date, all in writing before work starts.

Build

Design, build, tracking, and follow-up wired together and tested end to end.

Launch

Redirects mapped so you keep your rankings, every form and phone link checked by hand.

On results: we publish no case studies with round-number percentage gains and an unnamed client. They cannot be verified, which is exactly why they are written that way. Ask on a call and we will walk through real projects with real context, including phase-one builds where the data said something we did not expect.

What goes in writing: a fixed price against an agreed scope for each phase, a launch date, conversion tracking that demonstrably fires, and a monthly report you can read in five minutes. The full process is here, week by week.

Questions from Indianapolis business owners

How much does website design cost in Indianapolis?

Basic plans start at $1,000 for a real phase one, rising with page count, integrations, and whether we write the content. The price is national and does not carry an Indianapolis premium. Later phases are scoped and priced separately when you decide to build them. Full breakdown here.

Does building in phases cost more overall than doing it at once?

Only if phase one was built on something that cannot grow, which is the usual reason phasing gets a bad name. When the structure is set correctly at the start, later phases are additions rather than replacements and the total is close to the same — with the advantage that you spent the later money on what the data showed rather than what you guessed in a planning meeting.

Do you have an office in Indianapolis?

No. Our office is in Salt Lake City and we work with Indianapolis businesses remotely, over video calls and shared documents. We do not list addresses we do not occupy, so it is better said plainly here than discovered later.

How do we know when to build phase two?

When the data says something specific — one service page attracting most of the traffic, a search term arriving repeatedly that you have no page for, or the same question coming up on every call. Six to eight weeks of real traffic is usually enough. If nothing clear has emerged after a few months, the honest answer is that phase two is not the priority yet, and we will say so rather than sell it to you.
